  • Grief & Life Transitions Therapy in Michigan

Attunigrate offers virtual therapy for adults across Michigan moving through loss or major change. A death, a divorce, a move, a diagnosis, a career that ended, or a version of your life that quietly stopped being available. Sessions are online, most major insurance is accepted.

Does this sound like you?

Everyone has stopped asking, and you are nowhere near done

You're functioning so well that people have decided you're fine

It hits at ordinary moments and not at the ones you brace for

What you lost was complicated, and grieving it feels like it requires

a simpler story than the truth

Nothing technically bad happened. Your life changed and you are grieving it anyway

You've started to wonder whether this is taking too long

What's actually happening

Grief is not a sequence of stages you pass through and finish. It comes in waves that get further apart rather than smaller, which is why the second year sometimes lands harder than the first: the support has thinned out and the waves have not.

It also is not limited to death. Any loss of a future you were counting on produces the same process, which is why divorce, illness, migration, and the end of a career can grieve exactly like a bereavement and often go unrecognised because nobody died.

The work is not acceleration. Nothing makes this shorter, and a therapist promising that is selling something. The work is having somewhere to put it that does not require managing anyone else's discomfort, and rebuilding around a shape that has changed.

How we treat it

Narrative Therapy

Rebuilds the account of your life around the change rather than treating the change as the end of the story.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

The part still holding on and the part trying to move forward are both yours, and they do not have to fight.

Somatic Therapy

Grief is physical. Somatic work gives it somewhere to go besides your chest and your sleep.

If you think it's been too long

There is no schedule. People arrive here two months after a loss and

twenty years after one, and neither is wrong. Grief that has been carried a long time without anywhere to put it does not get smaller on its own, it gets quieter, which is not the same thing. If it is still shaping how you live, it is current.

What the first six sessions look like

Before you start

A free consult with the therapist you have been matched to. You are matched on what you are bringing, not on who has an opening, and you still have to feel safe with the person in front of you. We verify your insurance and tell  you your exact cost before session one.

Sessions 1 and 2

History and what brought you here: the primary concern, and the life events that led to it. There is paperwork at this stage, and it can feel like a lot. No one is asking you to relive anything yet. By the end of session 2, you and your therapist set goals together, on a three- to six-month horizon.

Sessions 3 and 4

You are both still getting acclimated, and you are deciding together how to approach the thing you came in for. Your therapist is mostly listening here rather than teaching. This is your time to talk and put things down.

Sessions 5 and 6

If EMDR was part of the plan at intake, this is usually where it starts. If it was not, this is often where your therapist starts handing you language: words for patterns you have lived a long time without being able to name. By this point, the early doubts have been said out loud and dealt with, and it feels safe to work.

FAQ's

There is no standard length, and the framing of stages you complete does not match how it actually goes. Waves tend to get further apart rather than smaller. If it is still shaping how you live, it is worth support regardless of how long it has been.

Yes. Divorce, illness, migration, estrangement, and the end of a career all produce the same process, and they are harder to grieve precisely because nobody treats them as losses.

Because handling it well and being okay are different things, and most people are only equipped to notice the first. Functioning through grief is common and it is not evidence that the grief is resolved.

No. Grief carried without support tends to get quieter rather than smaller, and people regularly do this work decades later.

Yes. Dr. Leija works in Spanish and English, and she leads this work here.
